Vennel Press: Background
Vennel Press was founded by Leona Medlin and Richard
Price to publish Donny O'Rourke's first collection, Second Cities,
published in 1991. This book of poems about Chicago heralded a witty,
generous-spirited, supple poetry and quickly sold out. Encouraged
by this success, Vennel invested in early books by W. N. Herbert,
Elizabeth James, David Kinloch, and Peter McCarey, as well as collections
by the founders themselves.
Each Vennel volume features at least one illustration by an artist
who has worked closely with the poet: they are beautiful objects
as well as impressive collections.
Later the imprint Au Quai was established by Donny
O'Rourke and Richard Price to publish work in translation. Vennel
also acts as the distributor for the back catalogue of Southfields
Press, including back issues of Southfields magazine.
A fuller history is given at Vennel Press, A Memoir
Vennel and Au Quai are not currently accepting
submissions of new work.
